SIV (safety)

This course is designed to enable pilots to practise the voluntary approach, entry into, execution of and recovery from several extreme manoeuvres. It is a requirement for the Sports licence and is recommended for pilots that want to increase their confidence as well as their knowledge and understanding of dynamic and unstable flight.

These manoeuvres can include:

  • spiral dives,
  • asymmetric tucks,
  • symmetrical tucks,
  • dynamic stalls,
  • parachute stalls,
  • B-line stalls,
  • frontal stalls,
  • spins,
  • wing-overs,
  • and reserve deployments.

The clinic provides the facilities to allow pilots to have significant height over the lake where they can practise their chosen manoeuvres with the added safety of the lake.

Every pilot should provide a paraglider and harness with reserve parachute. It is also recommended that each pilot has a copy of the manufacturer's manual for the paraglider they are flying.

What to Expect:

We meet the day before the clinic and have a briefing on the manoeuvres we intend to execute. We will discuss execution and recovery from all of them. We hope to be starting at dawn the next day to be sure that we get as much from the day as possible.

Bring a change of clothes. All launches will be foot launching. There will be buoyancy jackets available, which must be worn on every flight. In the event of landing in the water there is a boat to recover pilots. The clinic provides facilities for a minimum of four flights.

In the event of bad weather the course will continue on the following day. If the course cannot be completed on the following day, it will be rescheduled. The clinic will be video taped so you can review and analyse your flights.
